The St. Regis administrative team would like to thank all those who participated in and attended our 2022 Truth & Reconciliation Recital on May 14th, a major annual event hosted jointly by our school and UBC’s Faculty of Music. The afternoon was a complete success and was enjoyed by all.
The recital began with a speech from the Deputy Mayor, Councilwoman Colleen Hardwick, followed by a beautiful musical performance by the St. Regis Chamber Choir accompanied by UBC school of music performers. The performance included seven pieces of Western and First Nations music, in effort to show that cultural differences and historical legacies could be properly acknowledged, remembered, and bridged by music.
The St. Regis Chamber Choir, accompanied by instrumentalists from UBC’s School of Music, and directed by Ms. Cathrie Yuen, our accomplished choral conductor also from UBC, performed four songs from the rich Western European and American musical traditions.
Mr. Les George, an esteemed Knowledge Keeper and Cultural Guide of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, lead our choir and other indigenous musicians in sharing three songs from the deeply inspiring and beautiful traditions of British Columbia’s First Nations Peoples.
The event helped us not only to remember the injustices of Canada’s colonial past and present, but also reflected on how, through Truth & Reconciliation, partnership and dedication, we can work together to create a brighter future.
