Preparation for university application begins immediately upon a new student’s admission to St. Regis with the creation of the IUPP. As successful admission to leading universities often requires years of purposeful preparation, students are encouraged to devote serious thought to their goals beginning in grade 10.
Beginning in grade 10, our School and Regional Specialists start making plans with students and the Head Teacher. Students are invited to a series of events, seminars, and career fairs through our St. Regis @ UBC Programme to increase their knowledge of potential careers, advance their goals, and pave the way for the relevant preparation for university admittance. To help students explore international opportunities, St. Regis students are invited to participate in international universities’ events such as the US College Expo.
At the same time, students are expected to make subject-focused preparations for their core academic courses and standardised tests. This is done with the assistance of the Head Teacher in specially arranged tutorial sessions.
Finally, our School and Regional Specialists identify and arrange extracurricular and volunteer activities that appeal to our grade 10 students’ personal interests. In subsequent years, these activities serve as the first step in enhancing each student’s Extracurricular and Leadership Profiles on university applications.
At the end of the second semester of grade 10, our School and Regional Specialists facilitate Individual Course Planning Sessions. These sessions help students and parents complete an overall design of the courses the students will be taking leading to their graduation.
By grade 11, preparation for and research begin in earnest, with an Introduction To Universities session hosted by the Academics and Universities Director. This introduction session provides students with a comparative data analysis on potential universities as well as a comprehensive breakdown of the application processes for each school. The School and Regional Specialists review the academic records of each student and host one-to-one interviews to assess academic development, extracurricular performance, and to recommend suitable courses based on the latest admissions data. Parents, close friends, and family are encouraged to share their insights and knowledge throughout the planning process.
As they work through their core credit courses, standardized test tutorials, and extracurricular and volunteer sessions, students continue to attend events, seminars, and talks delivered by top university professionals.
At the end of the second semester, our School and Regional Specialists assist students in drafting a comprehensive list of intended universities and subject specialisations, providing expert advice to help students determine the key points of their personal statements. Students are also invited to participate in Higher Education Fairs during the summer between grades 11 and 12 to guide them as they finalise their plans.
During the first term of a student’s grade 12 year at St. Regis, our Academics and Universities Director performs a final interview with each student and their parents to review and update the student’s performance, goals, and personal profile. A comprehensive analysis is also performed to evaluate the student’s likelihood of success, with personalised recommendations on university applications and how to maximise the student’s remaining time in high school.
Over the Christmas holidays, the School and Regional Specialists provide assistance to each student in finalising their university applications as well as their personal statements. Before the end of January, our students submit the student’s university applications through the OUAC System for selected Canadian universities, UCAS System for UK universities, and US Common System for American universities.
In March and April, our students receive both Conditional and Unconditional Offers from universities. As each student focuses their efforts on the BC Literacy and Numeracy Assessments, our School and Regional Specialists ensure that the Conditional Offers are finalised. All St. Regis students receive support on course planning, scholarship and housing applications, cultural acclimation, and other preparations vital to their first-year university experience. Selected students who are admitted to UBC also receive an invitation to enroll in our school’s UBC Continuing Education Programme.
